Cathedral window quilts have a unique and fascinating construction method, unlike any other quilt. Instead of layers of backing and batting and a pieced top, they are traditionally constructed of squares of muslin, folded into several layers and hand sewn together. On top of this base, gracefully curving bias folds are turned and stitched to make "frames" over inserts of colorful fabric "windows". This is an amazingly beautiful dimensional quilt that has been hand stitched. Because of the detail and the folding, it is not suitable for hand quilting. The layers are much to thick for that. And so the backing is also muslin that is part of the folded process. These quilts were made in the early days of quilt making in our country, but it is very unusual to find this pattern well done, hand made, and this beautiful in quilts of todays selections.
The "window fabrics" were selected from multiple fabrics of beautiful pastel fabrics. All fabrics are 100% cotton fabric. This is a true beauty and nothing of like kind. It is signed and dated on lower back corner as all C Jean Horst's quilts are labeled and heirloom quality. All 4 edges of this quilt are beautifully pointed as shown. If you would this on a king size bed, turn the length for the width and you will have an 18" drop on the sides of your bed. There will be no extra length for a pillow tuck, but a few pillows on the head end of the bed will be just lovely. This pattern allows the cathedral windows to be turned either way since they are diamond shapes. Lovely idea !! (quilt is show as full/ queen on photo which allows for the pillow tuck length. If that's confusing you, give me a call. I'll explain my thoughts to you. A high quality quilt.
